GeoWall is one of 13 project teams under SCSE at UC San Diego, each giving students an opportunity to work on a hand-on project related to a specific discipline of structural or civil engineering. GeoWall specializes in geotechnical engineering, exposing students to an area of study that is typically not introduced until their fourth year. Each year, we work to design a small-scale MSE retaining wall out of Kraft paper that retains 500 lbs. of sand plus vertical and horizontal surcharge loads. Competition rules change each year and the strip layout is optimized to reduce the amount of paper used. Anyone is welcome to join, regardless of academic level or background. Members can choose to be involved in whatever interests them, whether that is technical analysis, construction, or even just painting the box. Last year we made our box dragon themed! At the beginning of every Spring quarter (between March and April), we compete against other local colleges at our regional competition (PSWS). The conference allows us to learn more about other project teams, network with industry professionals, and grow together as a team.
