The AISC Student Steel Bridge Competition is an annual competition that challenges student teams to develop a scale-model steel bridge. The team must determine how to fabricate their bridge and then plan for an efficient assembly under timed construction at the competition. Bridges are then load tested and weighed. The bridge must span approximately 20 feet, carry 2,500 pounds, and must meet all other specifications of the competition rules. The criteria for performance is a combination of having the stiffest, lightest, and easiest to construct bridge. Bridge aesthetics are also judged and considered in the final results of the competition.
The Student Steel Bridge Team at UC San Diego is a student-run organization under the Society of Civil and Structural Engineers at UCSD. We work to compete in the ASCE regional competition: Pacific Southwest Symposium against 13 other steel bridge teams. We completely design, fabricate, and construct the bridge from scratch. The team is split into 3 subteams: Design, Fabrication, and Construction, and is managed by the Project Managers. The Design team is responsible for modeling the bridge and optimizing the design to be as competitive as possible. They primarily use SAP2000, Autocad, and SOLIDWORKS to conduct analysis and prepare drawings for the fabrication team. The Fabrication team works closely with the Design team to fabricate the bridge to exact specifications. Using technical knowledge of Welding (MIG/TIG), CNC, Waterjet, Fablight, angle grinding, and other various metal fabrication techniques, the fabrication team works quickly and efficiently to prepare the bridge for the construction team. The Construction team is integral to placing well in competitions, they work to assemble the bridge as fast as possible with no penalties to get the most efficient score.
Steel Bridge is an invaluable opportunity for members to gain practical experience and connect with a professional network of like-minded engineers. If you would like to get involved we hold Fabrication, Design, and Construction workshops throughout the year and hold many fabrication sessions during winter quarter to make the bridge. No experience is required and any undergraduate student at UCSD can join. We hold no application for membership, the only requirement to be a part of the team is to show up to events. This team is truly what you make of it but we hope you can find a community within us.
To keep up to date on what we’re up to, we primarily announce events on our discord server as well as our Instagram page. We also have a new website! If you would like to hear more about us and see our upcoming events we will also be posting them there:
