What and who are we?
The Timber Strong Design Build team is an undergraduate structural engineering club under the Society of Civil and Structural Engineers. We compete annually at our regional competition for the Pacific Southwest Symposium. Our goal is to design draft and construct a two story timber structure in under 90 minutes. We are a team of students with a common goal of success and development looking to improve and expand every year. Our goal is to not only place at our regional competition but to prepare all members for their future careers like interview practice and give them the experience to demonstrate their knowledge and skills to professionals.
Why you should join?
Timber Strong Design is an engineering team that welcomes students from all majors, as long as you have the interest and dedication to contribute. There is no strict time commitment; we believe that the more you put in, the more you will gain. Through one or more of our subteams—Construction, Drafting/Design, or Architecture/Aesthetics—you’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in class to real-world projects. We now also offer another subteam, which is Management, that will help the team to organize and to assist the entire team for achieving deadlines and goals.
Being a part of Timber Strong Design not only helps you develop valuable structural engineering skills but also provides a head start for many upper-division courses in Structural Engineering. Additionally, this experience will look great on your resume and offer a unique chance to broaden your horizons, both personally and professionally.
How to join?
We always welcome new members, and anyone interested is encouraged to attend one of our subteam meetings or join our General Body Meetings (GBMs) held at the start of each quarter. However, if you're looking to participate in the competition and want to get more involved with the club, we recommend joining us in the Fall or early Winter quarter, as our competition takes place at the beginning of the Spring quarter.
Meeting times for our subteams and other events are regularly updated on our Discord, linked below. For more information, or if you'd like to hang out at one of our social events, those are typically posted on our Instagram, also linked below. We hope to see you at our meetings!
